Gothic is the first game in the company's Piranha Bytes created in 1997 by five former employees of Greenwood Entertainment studio. Work on it began, however, a year earlier. The project is based entirely on original technological solutions, including Zengin graphics engine.
The game takes players to a fantastic Myrtana kingdom, ruled by King Rhobar II. Playing the character Bezimienngo they hit the penal colony on the island Khorinis. It is surrounded by magic, penetrable only from the outside barrier, which created Archmages. Unfortunately, during the incantation something unexpected happened. Reach spell was larger than expected and the whole area was surrounded by a barrier of Mining Valley, trapping the magicians.
